   A Piece of Night by Jeannie Carlson

Night, transparent and obscure

Contradictory in its demeanor

Beguiles clouds continuously crowded together

Seeking solace from the moon's

Unflinching white,

Wiping the earth of shadows,

Nature yields to the celestial realm

Clearing a corridor across the sky

Silently driving its well-worn path,

Piquing the interest of the temporal, sentient

And those creatures not;

Rustling jasmine dot the vines,

Bow to the mammoth whiteness above,

Undisturbed delight is a memory muse,

Exposing opaque visions of home.
